A review of the introduced forest pests in Brazil PAB
Schühli,Guilherme Schnell e; Penteado,Susete Chiarello; Barbosa,Leonardo Rodrigues; Reis Filho,Wilson; Iede,Edson Tadeu.
Abstract: Special attention should be given to forest plantings in order to minimize the probability of exotic pest introduction and, consequently, of production losses. The objective of this review was to present, under a historic perspective, the main exotic insects that harm the Brazilian forest sector. Therefore, to better describe the phytosanitary context of introduced forest pests in Brazil, the main information regarding these insects was gathered here. Introduced species and species with a risk of introduction were listed. The following species were registered: 12 exotic introduced species related to eucalyptus, non-quarantine; 9 species related to pine, one quarantine; and 1 species related to teak, quarantine. Overall, the core problems for 57...

Detection of pine woodwasp in Pinus taeda in São Paulo State, Brazil Ciência Rural
Wilcken,Carlos Frederico; Souza,Amanda Rodrigues de; Puretz,Barbara de Oliveira; Camargo,Gabriella Ferreira de.
ABSTRACT: The woodwasp Sirex noctilio (Fabricius) (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) is one of the main pests of Pinus plantations in South America. The aim of this study is to report the occurrence of S. noctilio in Pinus taeda in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. The surveys were carried out in the arboretum of Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas (FCA) da Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP), campus Botucatu, SP where six species of Pinus are distributed in blocks of 100 trees. Resin beads were observed on the trunks and stems of Pinus species. In post-flight evaluation it was reported that 8.77% of P. taeda trees showed symptoms of oviposition by S. noctilio. A female S. noctilio was found performing oviposition. Sirex noctilio is present in...

Feeding and oviposition preferences of Ctenarytaina spatulata Taylor (Hemiptera, Psyllidae) for Eucalyptus spp. and other Myrtaceae in Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Queiroz,Dalva Luiz de; Zanol,Keti M. R.; Oliveira,Edílson B.; Anjos,Norivaldo dos; Majer,Jonathan.
Feeding and oviposition preferences of Ctenarytaina spatulata Taylor (Hemiptera, Psyllidae) for Eucalyptus spp. and other Myrtaceae in Brazil. The Australian psyllid, Ctenarytaina spatulata Taylor (Hemiptera, Psyllidae), was first detected in Brazil in 1994, where it was found on drought-affected shoots of Eucalyptus grandis in a plantation located in the northern part of Paraná State. The oviposition and feeding preferences of this psyllid were examined on 19 Eucalyptus species, one Eucalyptus hybrid (Cambiju), three Corymbia species and four native Myrtaceae species (Hexaclames edulis, Marlieria edulis, Plinia trunciflora, and Psydium sp.) under greenhouse conditions. The largest populations of C. spatulata were found on E. robusta and E. pellita, while...

First report of Hypsipyla grandella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on African mahogany Khaya ivorensis Scientia Agricola
Zanetti,Ronald; Abreu,Caroline Silva; Silveira,Stephannie Hellinet Prado; Andrade,Eliana Donizete.
ABSTRACT The mahogany shoot borer Hypsipyla grandella Zeller is an important economic pest in all American tropical forests, because it prevents monoculture of valuable timber trees species like mahogany and cedar. The shoot borer damages several tree structures, especially the apical shoots, impairing the formation of the commercial stem. This pest can attack the plants during the year and one larva per plant is enough to cause significant damage. In infested areas, the attack can reach up to 100 % of the trees. The Australian cedar and African mahogany have been cultivated in Brazil for timber production, because they are considered resistant to H. grandella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) attack. However, in this work we report for the first time the H....

Leaf-cutting ant attack in initial pine plantations and growth of defoliated plants PAB
Nickele,Mariane Aparecida; Reis Filho,Wilson; Oliveira,Edilson Batista de; Iede,Edson Tadeu; Caldato,Nádia; Strapasson,Priscila.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the natural attack by Acromyrmex crassispinus in initial Pinus taeda plantations without control measures against ants, as well as the effect of defoliation in seedlings of P. taeda. Evaluations of the attack of leaf-cutting ants on P. taeda plantations were done monthly in the first six months, then 9 and 12 months after planting. The percentages of plants that were naturally attacked by ants were registered. The effect of defoliation was evaluated by artificial defoliation, simulating the natural patterns of attack by A. crassispinus on P. taeda seedlings. The natural attack of A. crassispinus was greater during the first months after planting, being more intense in the first 30 days. Artificial defoliation...

Registro de Glycaspis brimblecombei em Eucalyptus spp., em Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brasil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Breda, Mariana Oliveira; Oliveira, José Vargas de; Carvalho, Andréa Nunes Moreira; Queiroz, Dalva Luiz de.
Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore, 1964, (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) is an insect of Australian origin which can cause severe damage on the production of different species of Eucalyptus. In Brazil, its presence was first described in the State of Sao Paulo in 2003 and it is present in several states such as Paraná, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Espírito Santo and Bahia. The occurrence of this insect in Pernambuco in Petrolina municipality on a small stand of Eucalyptus spp. confirms the dispersive and adaptive potential of this specie.doi: 10.4336/2010.pfb.30.63.253

The exotic wasp Megastigmus transvaalensis (Hymenoptera: Torymidae): first record and damage on the Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolius drupes, in São Paulo, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Ferreira-Filho,Pedro J.; Piña-Rodrigues,Fátima C.M.; Silva,José M.S.; Guerreiro,Julio C.; Ghiotto,Thaís C.; Piotrowski,Ivonir; Dias,Luiz P.; Wilcken,Carlos F.; Zanuncio,José C..
ABSTRACT This paper records the first report of Megastigmus transvaalensis Hussey (Hymenoptera: Torymidae) in Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (Anacardiaceae) drupes in Sorocaba, state of São Paulo, Brazil. This wasp is an invasive species and was found damaging S. terebinthifolius drupes in urban areas (35.0±15.8%), natural forests (21.5±10.2%) and restoration areas (15.8±8.4%). The bio-ecology and damage caused by M. transvaalensis in the S. terebinthifolius drupes warrants further study focused upon the management of this phytophagous wasp. Megastigmus transvaalensis has a potential to be disseminated throughout Brazil and is posing a threat to the natural regeneration of S. terebinthifolius in the native forests and restoration...
